Learn to Lead Climb
Lead License
To Lead belay and to Lead Climb at HangDog you need to have a Lead License Issued by us.
A lead test costs $10 per person (on top of your entry fee) and takes about 45min. You'll need two people. Either both being tested or one who has their license already.
In this test you'll be required to fall several times as the climber, and, as a belayer, to catch several falls.
We do these tests on demand: preferably on the week days or week nights. To arrange a time with one of our senior instructors please send us an email at info@hangdog.co.nz

On-demand lead climbing courses
Who
- Typically you need to have at least two people to request a lead climbing course. Or you could have one person being taught and another person with their HangDog Lead License coming along as a climbing buddy.
- You will be expected to let go of the wall and fall onto the rope when requested. If you feel scared while top roping, perhaps leading isn't for you.
- All climbers need to be very comfortable with top-roping (normal indoor climbing).
- You should be able to top-rope a grade 17 easily
When
We run the lead courses on-demand. Send us an email to check with instructor availability. It will depend entirely on which senior instructors are available and when. You may not be able to get a dates and times you want.
Duration
For an average person we would expect three different lessons to be required. More in some cases.
Price
It varies depending on some factors of the group and the times of the bookings. Send us an email at info@hangdog.co.nz to find out more.
How to get started
The first thing to do is to learn how to clip quick draws. This can be practiced at home or at the gym. You just need a piece of practice rope. The video below shows some of the methods of clipping the rope.
Practice climb
You are allowed to practice clipping a "dummy lead rope" while climbing on top rope at HangDog. You should do this a few times before having a lesson to speed things up.
